Noises in my attic, what could it be?
Have you ever been sat in your house, perhaps settling down for bed or relaxing in the bath, only to hear some rather unsettling noises in your attic? This is a much more common occurrence then you may realise and for many home owners, the idea of having something scrabbling about above is concerning.
The bad news is that chances are, if you are hearing noises, then there is a good chance that you will have a pest living up in your attic, but the good news is that there is help out there to get rid of these pests and have your attic silent and pest-free.
So, what could those noises in your attic mean?
If you have a rat or two living in your attic then you are going to hear scratching and crawling, if you feel brave enough to then take a look up there then you are going to be likely to see blunt, spindle shaped droppings that are around 10-15mm long.
It is vital that you deal with and fix a rat problem in your home quickly. There are a number of DIY rat control products that you can try and use, however, the best way to beat a rat infestation is to speak to a pest control expert, not only treating the infestation, but also taking steps to prevent any future infestations.
It makes sense that the signs of having mice in your attic is much like having a rat in your attic. However, every activity is done on a smaller scale. Both are likely to gnaw wood and cables but the marks are smaller and their droppings will also be smaller than that of rats only coming up to around 1-2 mm long.
Mice can quickly take over any space that they live in, particularly since they are able to breed quickly. Much like rat infestations, you are going to need to call an expert in pest control as quickly as possible in order to get rid of the mice and have your loft clear.
A bird infestation is possibly one of the loudest that you can have, they are not only incredibly vocal, particularly if they feel trapped, but there will also be a considerable amount of flapping that you will be able to hear too. Their droppings are also obvious and are likely to be widespread across your attic.
You will always need to make sure that the bird that is living in your attic is not protected as this can cause a problem with their removal, particularly if they have a nest and eggs that they are rearing. It is important that you speak to a pest control expert to ensure that you are taking the right approach. You also should take steps to protect your attic such as using bird netting or wire systems.
A common infestation to see in your attic is insects, usually wasps or sometimes flies. If this is a problem for you then there will be buzzing sounds that you can hear, and if you take a look up in the loft you are likely to see the insects flying around.
When it comes to wasps, you should never try to tackle this alone, you need to speak to an expert and ensure that they take the right steps to remove the wasps and to then ensure that they do not return.
As you can see, there are a number of reasons why there are noises in your attic. Don’t worry that there is some hideous monster up there, just remember that there could be some pests that need dealing with instead.
